All along the corridors and in every room you find a treasure of old family portraits and for this, Abhay deserves brownie points as this gives the hotel its charm. There are two levels and ten rooms, each named after a member of the Mangaldas family. A long corridor leads to the lobby from where you make your way up to the room. When you arrive, you are greeted by staff dressed in white kurta pyjamas and Gandhi topis (this is Bapu land, remember?). You might think it improbable to expect five-star luxury at an old time haveli, but you will be pleasantly surprised to know that the Mangaldas Hotel surpasses expectations. This hotel is mentioned in the Lonely Planet Guide as, 'a beautiful heritage hotel which houses vast veranda-edged suites, beautifully and simply decorated, with great attention to detail and excellent service." We chose to stay here. This is Abhay Mangaldas’ ancestral place built several generations ago and he saw potential in the old structure and refurbished it but retained the old-world charm and restored it to its former glory. We turned left and there before us stood a beautiful haveli a family mansion now a charming hotel. We would have done just that, except that we were accompanied by our guide Mr. Miss the sign and you drive onto the busy main road. A charming way to live, indeed, says Farzana Contractor.Ī simple sign at the kerb points to the driveway of the Mangaldas Girdhardas Boutique Hotel.
